50 Scholarship Program

50 The Maine Sheriffs' Association has established a scholarship program for one or more graduating high school seniors to further their education. Children of any part- or full-time employee (or deceased employee) of any division within the 16 county sheriff's offices may apply.

The number and amount of scholarships will be determined each year by the executive board of the association, and a deadline for filing an application will be determined. Each sheriff will have ample applications for his employees and the application is also available here on the website as a MSWord document. Each application needs to be reviewed by the applicant's sheriff who will certify that the applicant's eligibility (based on their parent's employment).

Once applications have been received and the filing deadline has passed, the president of the association will select two members of the executive board to serve with him as a selection committee. (No board member will be on the committee if they have submitted an application during that particular round of applications.) If a dependent of the president has submitted an application, he will select three board members to serve as the committe and recuse himself.

The selection committee will consider financial need of the applicants, how big an impact the scholarship has on the total tuition, whether the applicant will major in law enforcement, the applicant's grade point average, and their involvement in extracurricular activities.

Once the selection has been made, the president will notify the successful applicant(s). When the student begins their second year of college, upon proof that they are still enrolled, the predetermined scholarship amount will be sent to the business office of the student's college for credit to the student's tuition account.
